Road Tripping!

Lake is all ready to go! Mummy and Lake are heading to Black Butte Ranch near Sisters to meet up with best friend Kindricks. We get on the road by 11:00am. He sleeps four hours and we get through the Seattle-Tacoma-JLMB-Olympia and Portland traffic before he wakes up in Oregon!! We spend a full hour at the rest area just north of Woodburn. Time passes quickly with an infant!

We make it to Eugene, they pump our petroleum at the station, then a few hours a mountain pass of 3000′ and two more stops with a baby blowout at each one brings us to a (foggy) viewpoint of Mt. Washington.

A bit of unremitting wailing which feels like much longer of course. Maybe the elevation is getting to his ears?! Will breastfeeding help? We will find out!

Success! We arrive at Black Butte Ranch. The air smells so fresh and sweet with pine forests all around. We sleep well and everyone in the house enjoys our “ocean-front property” sound projection.  Thank you for your generosity in inviting us to join in your family vacation Kindricks! We love you! We are looking forward to a few days of many baby-hungry hands around! …and fresh air and tennis and yoga and swimming…!

The Voracious Mr. Cat

Diaper Genie

I find it curious that Mr. Cat, who has a famously voracious appetite, has no interest in breast milk. Here’s a cat who has to have a special food bowl to slow him down and will try to attack any available foodstuffs that aren’t locked up. I suppose it’s a blessing not to have him stalking me and kneading all over me, but I still find it curious. And I miss out on the convenience of him cleaning up after me as I leak all over the place. Yes, since my main job right now is skin-time feeding Lake, summertime business casual is…yes.

New discovery: Mr. Cat also doesn’t prefer the TJ’s eggplant hummus: too much eggplant, not enough hummus! Yet another reason it’s my new favorite hummus variety (although it can’t hold a candle to Cafe Turko’s hummus); it gives me a bit of reprieve from trying to fend him off while breastfeeding and trying to eat lunch. All in all he’s a solid cat friend: a keeper.

At least he maintains his standards… unlike some of us, who feel them slipping a bit further each day. You know you’re in deep when you use the cloth diaper you get wet to clean your baby up up in the morning as a hot compress to wash your face. You can’t resist it feels so inviting. Then afterwards you apply his diaper cream as your morning face anti-aging serum. Then you finish with being back to using said diaper to clean him up… business as usual. Fresh nappy, fresh mummy!

Mr. Lake, nearly ten pounds!

Friendship

Friendship

Sometimes a Glassybaby says it all.

Friendship.

My unique professional cadre of mentors and friends: I’m so blessed to have been adopted into this very exclusive sorority. I owe my amazing job to the connections and confidences of these women, and it is this job that is granting me these six months of family leave to spend getting to know my firstborn son.

Additionally, these women have been there for it all. We have been there for each other through the challenges and the triumphs, the highs and the lows, the births and the deaths, and the insane and the miraculous.

Somewhere in between the diaper changes, outfit changes, spit-up mop-ups, walking dates, car seated errands, shushing and blogging and breastfeeding  I hope I’m imparting Lake with the wisdom and ability to make and appreciate strong friendships. Friendships are the music of my life. As we move through the early days, weeks and months of life with Lake I find myself surrounded with the generosity of friends.

There was the Friendship Glassybaby that lit the dark moments of the early days when Lake’s rooting needed a guiding hand. There are the cloth diapers and cloth diaper service that we rely so heavily on to provide elegance and ease to a messy situation, nearly a full year gifted through supportive baby shower goers. Many of my favorite workhorse staples came to me through gifts or hand-me-downs from experienced mums: the K’tan, Baby Bjorn, infant car seat, Rinseworks sprayer, and Instant Pot. We are surrounded by books from the shower that wait patiently like friends for Lake to catch up. Just today while eating he has started gazing quietly and curiously at the pieces on our art gallery wall. Books are close behind!

So, thank you friends! I appreciate your friendship. Even when you’re not with me or no longer nearby, you keep us strong. May Lake sense this richness and allow the flame of friendship to bless his life’s path, too.

And I’m grateful for boys club too. The guys hanging by Tolt River, a tributary of the Snoqualmie, which flows into the Snohomish.

A perfect life; I’m glad I am spending it with you.

Multiple Alarm “Fire”

Multiple Alarm “Fire”

The term multiple-alarm fire is a quick way to convey a fire is uncontained and requires concerted and immediate response. One, two or three alarm fires designate the level of force required to adaquately meet the needs of the emergency. Along a similar vein, my husband has come up with a grading system for Lake’s level of distress.

Stage I: Actively engaged in efforts to self-soothe, but encountering difficulty. May be tired or have non-self-limiting conditions such as lying in a fresh pool of spit ups. Requires non-urgent attention.

Stage II: Unable to self-soothe. Requires intervention. Change of environment, picking up, swinging, singing ABBA or Ween are all good options.

[unconscionable to picture]

Stage III: severe. Efforts of parental soothing are ineffective or otherwise necessarily delayed (eg occupied with driving). Requires breastfeeding or cry-it-out parental endurance until off-switch is eventually reached and sleep engulfs.

The other night my hair was greasy and I’m sure I was covered with all possible forms of breast milk. My husband had Lake gently jostling in his lap while reading. I thought it might be my chance to bathe.

I check in:

Is Lake okay, or is he about to decompensate?

He answers:

It’s always just a matter of time…

That didn’t seem severe enough to break my uninterrupted streak of daily bathing since arriving home from the hospital (including the two days our hot water was off), so I took that as a green light. When I came out of the shower, where I blissfully  can’t hear a thing, Lake was sounding off. Of course he presents as grave and alarmingly urgent, per his modus operandi. I quickly asked my husband in order to triage if I have time to continue with post-bathing rituals of potions and lotions,

What level is he escalated to?

He is holding Lake and engaging him with some, admittedly not all, of the 5 S’s. He gives me the update:

Stage II

I’m able to continue drying off, brushing hair, and applying face serum, deodorant, etc before taking him in my arms and feeding him. Now we both smell sweet!

(I’ve been asked to give my criteria for the Baby Cry Staging Tool (BCST):

Stage 1: Moderate fussing, wants something but not asking too hard. Gives way to concerned moaning up to grunting, hyperventilating, squawking and starfishing. Generally tolerable to the parental psyche but foreboding. Comes and goes as he builds up a good head.

Stage 2: Cries and howls, classic baby. Conveys impression that caregivers are monstrous to not respond immediately. Occasionally reforms to Stage 1, but oh only momentarily.

Stage 3: Final form where all physical and mental effort going into making a steady AAAAAA AAAAAA AAAAAA. Lays rigid and still, face symmetrical and red, mouth in a pulsing round yell. Not compatible with human life. -ed)

Pupuseria

In my current insatiable-appetite-of-a-breastfeeding-mummy state I continue my quest for delicious gluten/dairy/egg free cheap eats around my North Seattle neighborhoods. I must say this somehow bright but humble unassuming Salvadorian establishment is quite a hidden (in plain sight) gem. And it’s only five blocks away from our flat! It is tucked away just off the Ave in the residential southwest University District (Guanaco’s Tacos Pupiseria, 4106 Brooklyn Ave NE #102). You order at the counter but the sweet server brought us the meal to the table, after what seemed like her mother cooked it fresh, and then she actually cleared our table, too. Refreshing! Delicious!

For a light dinner or afternoon snack for the hungry but physique-minded diner I recommend trying just one surprisingly satisfying pupusa. For $3.50 I enjoyed a hot fresh handmade thick corn tortilla filled with nopa, ayote y pollo. It came with a tiny side of vegan pickled coleslaw salad. Just right!

Happy mummy! Happy bébé!

(Okay, he’s still working on his social smile!)

Independence

Happy Fourth of July!

Our little “All American!” We are trying to raise him as a sensitive ecologically minded global citizen. In spite of our penchant for complaining about the various American foibles, we do enjoy our freedom here in this utopian part of the country. Grandma Julie, meanwhile, from the comfort of her cozy home and Bainbridge bed enjoys all her boys gathered around her to the fullest!

My husband and I have a little mellow island fun walking around near the water, avoiding the big community parade this year. Time is already passing quickly and we relish Lake’s babyness. We see from looking at Lake’s cousins that the time for parades will come soon enough!

Enjoying our independence of sorts… hands free! Care free! At least for the weekend shared with family. Feeling festive, restful and reflective all at the same time. Let us be beacons of light and love in the world.

To Grandma’s House We Go!

We set out on foot just before noon for our adventure to Bainbridge Island. We walk to the University of Washington Medical Center, manage a quick errand at the ICU satellite pharmacy, then walk across the street to descend into the university of Washington link station. Lake catches a nap, short cry, and a snack all before we arrive downtown.

Lake’s first light rail!

We walk to the ferry terminal. Daddy carries all our luggage for our first weekend overnight away.

Arriving at the ferry terminal. Daddy gets the biggest ice cream sandwich ever! Smile to match!

Lakes first ferry ride! Our little family in the big city!

Auntie Kendra picks us up at the ferry terminal on Bainbridge Island and we enjoy a big holiday feast with the in-laws. Thank you for hosting us all on your beautiful island, Grandma Julie!

Ten Essentials

This morning I topped off Lake, changed his nappy, handed him over to my fantastic husband and walked up to practice vinyasa yoga for the second time this week at We Yoga. It was fantastic! I’m aware of how hard I’m working during yoga to get my practice back and figure it’s a corollary for life. It’s empowering and I’m so proud of my efforts. I’m up to walking an average of 4 miles per day now, ranging from 1 to 7.5 miles a day this week. I’m incredibly grateful for my opportunities and infrastructure. I can’t help but think our building’s walk score of 94 has a significant effect on my quality of life. This afternoon we wandered up through the University District Farmers market (I loaded up on local organic kale, Swiss chard, berries and stone fruits!) on our way to Arayas beautiful vegan lunch buffet with a visiting friend. Lots of good nutrition there! I’m also wearing the abdominal brace (e.g. Belly Bandit) for the third day now after my naïve two week hiatus and already I notice a huge difference in my shape. I wear it day and night and even wore it to yoga! It brings to mind that I’d like to share what is working well for me, allowing me to have an overall positive early maternity leave experience. So without further adieu here are my ten essentials including favorite equipment and services for enjoyable introduction to motherhood:

  1. Baby K’tan carrier easy to get out and about for earlier walking adventures
  2. Belly Bandit to reduce pain, provide support and get figure back
  3. Pharmax HLC neonate probiotic supplement to optimize baby’s early digestion
  4. Nipple salve versatile all-purpose  ointment to soothe and protect nipples, as well as baby’s diaper area, cradle cap and mummy’s face cream in a pinch!
  5. Baby Diaper Service for sanity and sanitation
  6. Rinseworks handheld sprayer for pericare
  7. MyBaby sound machine for ocean front property experience
  8. Button up shirts, knit skirts, shirt dresses, cashmere cardigans, and zippered jumpsuits for breastfeeding
  9. The intangibles: Nana for naps/early post-partum support and several hours reprieve. Friends/Babysitters for support and several hours reprieve (I started at four weeks). PEPS group (started at 1 week), loving husband/engaged partner.
  10. Exercise! For me that has been as able: walking at 2 weeks, yoga and pilates at 4 weeks, …running at 6 weeks? Carpe diem!

The Life Aquatic

The Life Aquatic

For Lake’s one month birthday on Wednesday the 29th he got to meet his Auntie Kendra and her family including his boy cousins, ages 2.5 and 5.5! They are down visiting from Ketchikan, Alaska for a few weeks with delightful husband Simon and charming father-in-law Rob, both from England. We planned to all meet at the aquarium, but by the time we got ourselves out of the flat and arrived there by bus, the Ketchikan boys were already done, and ready for the gift shop (“toy store”)… So Michael and I gave the front desk our licenses and got to go inside for free to meet his family at the gift shop. On the way there we were forced to pass by the cool tank with Diver Kim and all the coho, eels and other aquatic delights.

We snuck a looooooong peek. Tasty treat! We will be back when a) We have more time or b) Lake is awake and can appreciate the seals and otters and jellys and octopus a bit more.

Then we went to Red Robin for a big family lunch. I discovered the Wedgie Burger, a terrible name for my favorite way to eat a burger: no bun, wrapped in lettuce leaves instead. I was also delighted to find that my husband’s sweet potato fries were bottomless. So here while I thought I was being so mischievous stealing the last few fries, poof, I earned myself a whole fresh basket full. I said,

Oh, is this cheating?

He said,

No, it’s winning!

I love my husband! Much to his sister Auntie Kendra’s disappointment, however, Lake wasn’t much of a party goer. He hid out pretty much the whole time in his cozy K’tan wrap. Kind of an anticlimactic birthday. Good thing we will be spending Fourth of July weekend with them on Bainbridge Island. We promised Auntie and Grandma Julie lots of baby holding then.

Ice cream from Cupcake Royale down on the pier after lunch. We got the kids sufficiently messy and sugared up and then they ran off for the ferry back to Bainbridge for more summer fun with Grandma Julie.

Loving the moment: Summer Bliss at 2.5 years old…

What’s your favorite summertime memory or continued indulgence?!
